Sofía Vergara Got Real About The Reason She And Joe Manganiello Got Divorced

“He wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom. I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore,” Sofía said.

Sofía Vergara is opening up about the reason behind her and Joe Manganiello’s divorce.

As you might recall, Joe filed for divorce from Sofía back in July — just a couple of days after they announced that they’d decided to split. The pair had been married for seven years.

At the time, sources claimed that Sofía and Joe’s decision to separate was influenced by their differing opinions on having children together, with outlets reporting that while Joe had hoped to have kids, Sofía did not want to.

“He really wanted to have a baby with her and she wasn't interested and it caused a rift,” one source claimed to People.

For some context, Sofía has a 32-year-old son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, with her ex-husband, Joe Gonzalez. She was 19 years old when she gave birth to Manolo.

In 2014, when she split from Nick Loeb, Sofia found herself caught up in a years-long legal battle over the custody of their frozen embryos, which the pair had created using in-vitro fertilization while they were together.

Nick had hoped to bring the embryos to term with Sofía’s permission, and in 2017, she hit back with a lawsuit attempting to prevent him from using the embryos. A judge ultimately ruled in her favor, blocking Nick from using the embryos to term without her consent.

Now, speaking with Spanish newspaper El País this week, Sofía confirmed the reports that she and Joe divorced due to their conflicting views on having kids.

“My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” she shared.

“I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore,” she continued. “I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother.”

“I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do,” she added.

Sofía went on to say that when it comes to dating in the future, she would want a partner who already has his own kids.

“If love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children,” she said.
