Independence Day Weekend In Chicago Marred By Deadly Gun Violence

A 7-year-old boy was among seven people killed, and dozens others were injured in separate shootings around the city.

At least seven people were killed and dozens more injured in shootings around Chicago over the holiday weekend, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police told BuzzFeed News they were still tallying the various incidents and noted the weekend was not over. Last year, 82 people were shot and 16 of them died, the Tribune reported.

On Sunday, family members grieved for the youngest victim, 7-year-old Amari Brown.

"Who would do that? To a baby?" the boy's grandmother, Vedia Hailey, asked the Chicago Sun-Times.

The boy was in a group of children standing in a front yard after a fireworks show, WGN reported. He was struck in the chest and later died at a hospital.

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy later told reporters that the boy's father was the intended target of the shooting. McCarthy described him as a "ranking" gang member and added he was not cooperating with authorities.
