France Train Hero Released From California Hospital After Stabbing

The U.S. Air Force airman who helped foil an attack in a Paris train was released Thursday after being stabbed in an unrelated attack in California. On Saturday, police released a sketch of two suspects.

The U.S. Air Force airman who helped stop a shooting attack on a Paris-bound train in August was released from a California hospital after being stabbed, while police continue to search for suspects in the attack.

Spencer Stone was stabbed multiple times in his torso in Sacramento earlier this month. He was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and remained for a week.

Saturday, police released a sketch of two suspects and asked for the public's help in identifying them.

"I am thrilled that Airman Stone is doing well and proud that our level I trauma center was here to help," hospital CEO Ann Madden Rice said in a statement. "All of us at UC Davis wish him well in his continued recuperation."

In a statement, Stone thanked the first responders, as well as the UC Davis medical team that treated him.

"Thanks, also, to my amazing family and friends for their love and support," he said. "And, thanks to everyone who has sent encouragement during this challenging time. I'm focused now on healing and recovering and look forward to the next part of my journey."

On Thursday, Stone's mother Joyce Eskel also thanked the staff at UC Davis Medical Center on behalf of his entire family.

"I'm especially grateful to [trauma surgeons] Dr. Ellie Curtis, Dr. Garth Utter, the entire trauma team and the ICU nurses who treated Spencer so well," she said in a statement. "We've been overwhelmed by the support from our family and friends, the Sacramento area, the Air Force, and people around the world. Thank you all."

Stone captured headlines in August after he and two friends stopped a gunman wielding a handgun, knife, and automatic rifle. The men managed to subdue the man and tie him up without any deaths aboard the high-speed Paris-bound train with 550 passengers. Two people were injured.

Stone at that time suffered knife wounds to his hands and back, and appeared at a press conference wearing a sling.

The events that made Stone a household name did not appear to motivate the stabbing that left him in serious condition earlier this month.

Sacramento Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard said the early morning stabbing appeared to be related to an altercation between two groups that began in a nightclub.

Chase Eskel, told BuzzFeed News that his cousin had been defending a woman in the group he was with after two other men yelled at her.

The two men went on to stab Stone, and then fled the scene in a dark colored 2009-2012 Camry, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

On Saturday, it released two sketches of the suspects in the stabbing who are described as two Asian or Filipino men.

The police investigation is still active and ongoing.
