France Confirms Kidnapping Of Man By ISIS-Linked Group In Algeria

The French man was kidnapped as ISIS called for attacks on civilians of France and other countries involved in a coalition fighting the terrorist group.

A French man was kidnapped by a terrorist group in Algeria, who threatened to kill him if France did not stop airstrikes in Iraq, the BBC reported.

French officials on Monday confirmed the authenticity of the video showing the 55-year-old hostage.

The man has been identified as Herve Pierre Gourdel, a mountain guide.

He had been driving with two Algerians through mountains in the eastern part of the country when they were stopped by armed men, the BBC reported. The men let the Algerians go.

In the video, the men claimed to be part of a group affiliated with ISIS and called on France to end its operations against the terrorist group.

An ISIS leader had previously released a 42-minute audio statement calling on its followers worldwide to kill civilians of countries involved in the coalition fighting the group, the AP reported.
