Adeoye reportedly has been struggling with depression for at least two years. She frequently ran away from home and was once found walking near the river in Manhattan last year.
Adeoye's neighbors described her as "stressed all the time" and not very social.
"She walked with her head down, she wouldn't look at you," said neighbor Manzel Jones, adding that after she ran away for three days, her mother "was lying on the floor in the hallway, crying and knocking on doors, asking, ‘Have you seen my daughter? She didn’t come home from school.’"
But one baseball teammate of Adeoye, Donna Fintzi, described the student as "really bubbly" and "always smiling."
Comfort Olowo, another teammate, spoke of the girl's optimism, recalling, "We'd be losing a game, but she'd be, 'It's OK. We can still get this.'"
