A United States marshal fatally shot a defendant inside Salt Lake City's new federal courthouse Monday morning, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The defendant, an alleged member of the Tongan Crip gang, charged toward a witness on the stand with a pen or pencil prompting the marshal to shoot him multiple times in the chest on the first day of trial.
The defendant was breathing as he was carried out of the courthouse on a stretcher, but details of his condition have not been released, according to FBI official Mark Dressen.
No one else was injured.
The defendant was 25-year-old Siale Angilau, an alleged member of the Tongan Crip gang indicted on racketeering charges in May 2010.
Angilau's trail was the last of the 17 Tongan Crip gang cases to be heard in the courthouse. Federal prosecutors alleged that the violent crew committed robberies, assaults, shootings, and murders over two decades in the Salt Lake Valley.
