Utah Woman Gets Life In Prison For Killing Six Of Her Babies

Megan Huntsman got the maximum sentence after pleading guilty in February to killing the infants.

A judge on Monday sentenced a Utah woman to life in prison after she admitted to killing six of her infants and hiding their bodies in her garage.

Megan Huntsman, 40, received the maximum sentence for her crimes after she pleaded guilty in February, the Associated Press reported.

Judge Darold J. McDade said that the case was "shocking," according to a reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune who was in the courtroom.

"I really thought I'd seen it all until this case came along," he said.

Huntsman will likely serve at least 20 years in prison before she is eligible for parole, KSL reported.

Huntsman told authorities she felt she was unable to care for her children because she was too addicted to meth and alcohol, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

"I held my secret for 18 years without telling a soul ... I have to live with this for the rest of my life," she said.

Huntsman admitted to police after her arrest that she killed the babies between 1996 and 2006, the Pleasant Grove Police Department told BuzzFeed News in February.

The deaths were discovered when her estranged husband discovered a dead baby in a box in their home last April. A seventh baby that was found in the garage was determined to have been stillborn.

Huntsman's husband was the father of all of the infants, according to the AP. Neither he nor the couple's three other daughters were suspects in the case.
