Scott Brown received $2,500 from Yankees president Randy Levine, according to recent campaign finance reports — "tapping the evil empire," as the Boston Herald put it — and Massachusetts Democrats are taking the opportunity to tag Brown as a hypocrite.
“Considering all the money Scott Brown takes from Wall Street it is easy to understand how a check from New York could get lost in the shuffle," Massachusetts Democratic Party spokesman Kevin Franck told BuzzFeed.
"The irony that Scott Brown is running campaign ads touting the Red Sox that are paid for with Yankee money is rich even by the standards of a typical Washington politician."
The donation from Levine has been perceived as particularly ironic given Brown's recent Red Sox-focused ads. Brown's camp is unperturbed, telling the Boston Herald, “We’re happy to accept Randy Levine’s donation. The way Scott Brown looks at it is, this is their way of paying us back for Babe Ruth.”
Now, both candidates for Massachusetts Senate have a Red Sox problem (Warren famously couldn't remember which years the team won the World Series). A spokeswoman for Elizabeth Warren didn't immediately return a request for comment.
