Gingrich's Secret Service Protection To Officially End Tonight

Newt Gingrich will lose his Secret Service protection tonight, a few days before the scheduled end of his campaign.

Newt Gingrich, who told reporters today that his campaign was about to "go bye-bye" will no longer have his Secret Service detail as of tonight, according to NBC News' Andrew Rafferty.

The Secret Service protection was costing the government around $40,000 a day, a fact that became controversial as Gingrich's campaign wore on and faded increasingly into irrelevance.

The decision came down from the administration, according to Gingrich press secretary R.C. Hammond.

"We informed the Department of Homeland Security of the campaign's plans to suspend on Wednesday," Hammond said. "It is their decision when best to stop providing coverage."
