Three transwomen will go before an appeals court in the Malaysian city of Putrajaya next week in a groundbreaking challenge to state Sharia codes that make it a crime for them to dress as women. Human Rights Watch produced this short documentary highlighting the impact of these laws, under which some transwomen have reported having been arrested more than 20 times. They are sometimes subjected to physical or sexual abuse at the hands of police, then fined and ordered to undergo "counseling" with religious authorities. Some are also jailed.
