What The Most Texted GIFs Say About Our Fragile Humanity

The most frequently texted reaction GIFs are a terrifying look into the wretched filth of our own souls. Also, people really like those dumb cartoon "minions."

PopKey is a keyboard you can add to your phone (accessible when you hit that globe icon, like for emoji) where users can pick GIFs sorted by reaction category to paste into text or email. It's like a reaction GIF folder that lives on your phone.

The app provided BuzzFeed News data about what its most popular GIFs were since its October 2014 launch. Currently, PopKey is approaching 1 million users, 30% of whom are daily users.

Technically, this list of most used GIFs is "most copied" – they only track if you copied the GIF to paste into a text; they don't know if you actually sent that text, or just left it as a painful "..." Also, keep in mind that there are other competing GIF keyboard apps out there, and these rankings are only from PopKey's data of 31 million images sent; it's possible on other services it would be very different.

That said, there's some interesting information here about ~how we text now~.

So what do the most frequently texted GIFs tell us? First, that our primary emotion while texting is "not amused." Three of the top 10 reaction GIFs are intended to signal to the recipient that whatever is going on is not OK. Second, these top GIFs reveal the messaging masses to be far too easily excitable. I mean, look at these reactions? We're talking near-maniacal screaming while quivering like a cold chihuahua.

Since the data is murky at best, I feel inclined to draw a very nonscientific conclusion here, and that is: We are all monsters, constantly passing judgement and disapproval on our loved ones and overreacting to everything like insane people.

Anyway, God is dead. Here are the most popular GIFs sent.
