Gunman In Canadian Terror Attack Revealed Motive In Cell Phone Video

The 32-year-old Canadian, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, said in a cell phone video he made before the attack that he was motivated by Canada's military involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The gunman who killed a Canadian soldier before storming Parliament last year said in a video that he was motivated by the nation's military involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In the cell phone video made in his car just before last October's attack, 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau said Canada had no right to involve its military in the Middle East conflicts and warned that its soldiers are "not even safe in your own land."

Soon after, Zehaf-Bibeau shot and killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was assigned to the honor guard at the Canadian war memorial in the capital city of Ottawa.

From there, Zehaf-Bibeau stormed Parliament, where he was shot dead by the sergeant-at-arms of the House of Commons.

The sergeant-at-arms, Kevin Vickers, was later hailed as a hero for stopping what Canada's prime minister called a terror attack.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Bob Paulson said he believes Zehaf-Bibeau was influenced by others.

Because of that, the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, the Associated Press reported.

"I wouldn't characterize it as network as it is commonly understood, but I am persuaded that he was influenced by other individuals toward these crimes so in that sense I am of the view that others were involved," he said.

In the video, which was released by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Zehaf-Bibeau explained his motivations for the attack:

"This is in retaliation for Afghanistan and because Harper wants to send his troops to Iraq," Zehaf-Bibeau said in the short video, which police released on Friday. "So we are retaliating, the Mujahedin of this world. Canada's officially become one of our enemies by fighting and bombing us and creating a lot of terror in our countries and killing us and killing our innocents. So, just aiming to hit some soldiers just to show that you're not even safe in your own land, and you gotta be careful."
