Two men walked into a restaurant in Sweden late Wednesday and opened fire, killing two people and injuring several others, local media reported.

The death count was expected to rise, with eight people in total seriously injured when the men opened fire with automatic weapons in a restaurant in Gothenburg, according to state broadcaster SVT.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, with several others transported to a local hospital, local media reported.

According to the Swedish news site Aftonbladet, one body was covered with a blanket at the entrance of Var Krog Och Bar, which was hosting a screening of a soccer match when the gunmen stormed in.

Earlier in the day, several cars were reportedly burned in another part of the city, raising fears of escalating gang violence.

A Swedish police spokesperson told local media that investigators believe the shooting was gang-related.

One witness, who declined to be identified and lives near where the shooting took place, told Aftonbladet: "Things are happening here almost every day, but this seems to be something special."

Other residents said there have been occasional incidents of gunfire in the past, but nothing as violent as what occurred on Wednesday.

The search for the gunmen remained ongoing overnight.

Gun ownership is legal in Sweden, but the government has instituted strict licensing rules.
