An Iraqi Air Force jet unintentionally dropped a bomb on a residential area of Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 12 people, The Associated Press reported.
The Russian-made fighter jet was flying over a neighborhood known as New Baghdad, in the east of the city when, according to an Iraqi military official, it experienced some technical issues.
"There were technical problems with a Sukhoi military plane while it was flying above a residential area in eastern Baghdad," Brig. Gen. Saad Maan told NBC News. "The bomb fell out and destroyed three houses," he said.
Two women and three children were among the dead, at least another 25 people have been wounded, according to AP.
The jet is reported to have been involved in military airstrikes against ISIS. Mann described the plane's pilot, whose identity is still unknown, as one of the "best in the country."
An investigation is now underway to determine what caused the plane to malfunction.
Monday's tragic accident comes as Iraqi forces are in the midst of an intense and protracted battle to regain control of vast areas of the country from ISIS.
The Sunni jihadi group has been taking vast swaths of territory since U.S. troops pulled out in 2011.
Today, Mosul-- Iraq's second biggest city--, as well as large parts of Anbar province, remain under ISIS' control.
