A Teen Was Convicted For Spending $26K A Bank Teller Mistakenly Put In His Account

What would you have done?

Last year, a bank teller in Madison County, Georgia, accidentally deposited $31,000 into the wrong account. Instead of giving the money to 70-year-old Steven Fields, who it belonged to, she gave it to 18-year-old Steven Fields.

The two are both from the small town of Hull, Georgia, and used to live on the same block, but reportedly never met.

Fields was convicted this week.

Upon discovering that his bank account had grown unexpectedly overnight, Fields bought himself some fast food. Oh, and also a BMW, the local Fox affiliate reported.

He spent approximately $26,000 of the $31,000 over a 10-day period, the Washington Times reported. He said he thought the money was from an inheritance.

The Madison County Sheriff said that Fields turned himself in a week later to face a felony charge of theft by taking.

BuzzFeed News has reached out to the Madison County Sheriff's office and the District Attorney's office for comment.

Stacey Sorrow, the woman who raised the teen, said “he was so excited" when he saw the money in his account. "I would have been too,” she added.

"I told that woman up at the bank she should have looked over her mistake if she knew there were three people up there with the same name," Sorrow added.

When the elder Steven Fields was asked if he thought the young Fields was sincere, he said, "It's like when people say, 'I'm sorry,' I feel like they're sorry they got caught."

The young Fields, who has since been arrested for possession of illegal drugs, was sentenced to 10 years probation and ordered to repay the money.

The bank teller was reportedly "forced to retire."

Steven Fields mistakenly received the $31,000 last year. A previous version of this article said last week.
