1-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot In Cleveland By 3-Year-Old

"It’s a sad day for Cleveland," Police Chief Calvin Williams told reporters.

A 1-year-old boy was fatally shot by a 3-year-old boy at a home in Cleveland's east side on Sunday afternoon, police told BuzzFeed News.

At least three children were being cared for by the 1-year-old's mother at the home on East 63rd St when the incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. local time, police spokesman Sergeant Ali Pillow said.

"One of the children managed to obtain a weapon and fired a single shot from that weapon striking the 1-year-old," Pillow said.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

"It's a sad day for Cleveland," Police Chief Calvin Williams told reporters at a press conference. "A 1-year-old child lost his life."

The person who left the weapon unsecured may face charges, USA Today reported.

Williams said the incident should prompt people to review their "fascination with handguns."

"This fascination we have with handguns, not just in the city, but in this country has to stop," he said. "This is a senseless loss of life in this city again. It's directly related to guns.

"We need to really take a hard look at the things that we're doing out there on the state, local, and national level to get some of these guns out of our community," he said.
