Rick Santorum's claim that 10% of Dutch die in assisted suicide, half against their will, provoked outrage in the the Netherlands.
But their Ambassador to Washington, Renée Jones-Bos, did not respond to inquiries from BuzzFeed or from the Dutch press about the incident, and Dutch politicians are now pressing for a formal statement.
"The Dutch Ambassador gave 'no comment' on the outrageous accusations of Santorum directed at our country. How is this possible?" Frans Timmermans, a Member of Parliament for the country's opposition Labour Party and former diplomat, wrote on his Facebook page. "I've asked some questions to [Foreign Minister Uri] Rosenthal and called for him to take a public stand. This will not stand."
