IKEA announced Monday that it will begin selling solar panels in attempt to bring renewable energy into the mainstream market. The solar panels are only available in its store in Southampton, England store, but they will soon be available in all 17 locations in the United Kingdom.
"We want to make a greener, more sustainable way of life attractive and easy for as many people as possible" said an Ikea spokesperson.
In the U.S., solar panels are available for purchase in Home Depot and Lowe's, but in other parts of the world, they remain difficult to find.
"We're dedicated to expanding our range of sustainable products that help customers save energy, water and sort waste four-fold by 2020," says IKEA.
IKEA's solar panels don't come cheap: they will cost you approximately $9,200. The price comes with an in-store consultation, as well as at home "installation, maintenance and energy monitoring service."
According to IKEA Chief Sustainability Officer Steve Howard, the price is "really good."
"If you are going to be in your house that long, your energy will be free after seven years," he said.
