After nearly 20 years of back and forth, the UN plans to ratify this treaty (which, unfortunately, can take years to complete). Still, this is the first agreement that [outlines an international commitment to protecting the high seas](https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/03/05/un-ocean-treaty-high-seas/) from climate change, pollution, illegal fishing, and other threats to ocean biodiversity, according to the Washington Post.
