There Have Been Two Shark Attacks In The Whitsundays In 24 Hours

    A girl and a woman both had their legs mauled.

    A young girl is in hospital after she was bitten by a shark in Queensland, less than 24 hours after a woman was mauled by a shark in the same area.

    Queensland Ambulance Service said the girl had a "significant leg injury".

    Paramedics treated her on Hamilton Island before she was flown by helicopter to Mackay Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

    Tasmanian woman Justine Barwick was attacked by a shark on Wednesday at the same spot, Cid Harbour.

    #Update - Paramedics are treating a female child in a serious condition with a significant leg injury after being bitten by a shark in waters near Cid Harbour. A critical care paramedic is at the scene with the @cq_rescue helicopter.

    Witness Mark Yates told ABC News he was holidaying on his boat in the harbour when Barwick was bitten on the upper right leg about 5pm on Wednesday.

    "I saw them dragging the poor woman out of the water," Yates said. "There was blood everywhere."

    RACQ CQ rescue helicopter crewman Ben McCauley said Barwick had "quite a big chunk of leg taken" and had suffered arterial bleeding as well as puncture wounds to her calf muscle.
