Chrissy Teigen Recalled Fearing That Her Card Would Get Declined On One Of Her Earliest Dates With John Legend After He Ordered A $58 Cocktail

“My heart broke because I knew then that my card would probably decline,” she recalled. “It was terrifying.”

There’s nothing quite like the dreaded fear you endure while waiting to see if your bank card is going to get declined at dinner, and it sounds like Chrissy Teigen can relate. Or at least she did, once upon a time.

As I’m sure you’ll know, Chrissy met John Legend back in 2006 after she was cast to star in the music video for his song, “Stereo.” They first crossed paths in John’s dressing room and quickly hit it off over the course of the 14-hour shoot.

According to them, it was a little while before things got serious, although they stayed in contact by texting and talking over the phone while John was touring.

“We were texting a lot, and I started to see her sense of humor,” John told Entertainment Tonight in 2016. “We would talk on the phone, and I started to fall in love with how engaging and witty and funny she is. And I think that's when I really started to know that this was the kind of person I wanted to be around a lot.”

Despite a brief rough patch in 2007, John and Chrissy have been together ever since. They married in 2013, and now share four children together: Luna, Miles, Esti, and Wren.

Right now, along with David Chang, Chrissy is promoting her upcoming food show, Chrissy and Dave Dine Out. And while talking with the Hollywood Reporter recently, she looked back on the first time she ever took John out to dinner in New York City.

“I took John to Jean-Georges,” she began, noting that she was only 20 years old at the time.

Like a lot of 20-somethings, it sounded like Chrissy wasn’t used to spending large sums of money at this time, so she got quite a fright when “the margarita that he ordered was $58.”

“I was just blown away when it came out,” she said of the fancy drink. “It came out on a little dish and had little salts and everything.”

Even though she was the one who chose the restaurant for their date night, Chrissy said she was suddenly concerned she’d made a serious mistake.

“My heart broke because I knew then that my card would probably decline,” she admitted. “I ended up going to the bank and getting cash because I was so, so scared that it would decline, so I ended up getting out like $800 cash.”

And while it seems she was fortunately able to pay for the meal, Chrissy recalled that her anxiety about the cost completely killed the romantic vibe she had been hoping for.

“Our meal there was beautiful and wonderful, but the fear that went into having it,” she remembered. “Oh my God, I’ll never forget that feeling in my entire life. It was terrifying.”

As this story serves to prove, Chrissy is quite the foodie. Although she recently revealed that she and John’s five-year-old son, Miles, hasn’t followed in her footsteps just yet.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week, the mom of four got candid about her kids’ eating habits and revealed that little Miles has “still never had a vegetable.”

“He accidentally ate a broccoli floret in a fried rice and was so upset about it,” she admitted.
