This week, the Senate will vote on increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 — something that will benefit millions of Americans. What most people don’t know is that passing this legislation would also greatly benefit tipped minimum wage workers: those Americans working for LESS than the minimum wage, who often struggle to put food on the table for their families every day. What’s more, most tipped workers are women, so raising the wage would bring us closer to equality in the workforce. Shamefully, Congress failed to act before the July 1st deadline to prevent your student loan interest rates from doubling. This is an issue on which we should all agree. I call on Congress to pass legislation that will retroactively prevent this de facto tax increase on young people already struggling under mountains of debt. At a time when Americans owe more than $1.2 trillion in student loans debt, the last thing we should do is make college more expensive for students and their families.
