Obama Calls From Air Force One To Congratulate Prop 8 Challengers

A little trip to Africa won't stop President Obama from congratulating two women who won their battle against Proposition 8 in the Supreme Court. Kris Perry and Sandy Stier were two plaintiffs in the case that effectively defeated Prop 8 on Wednesday, clearing the way for the couple to marry in their home state of California. The Human Rights Campaign president held the phone while two additional plaintiffs gathered to hear the president's remarks about their courage.

DOMA's Edith Windsor: Marriage Is A Magic Word

Edith Windsor won a landmark Supreme Court case on Wednesday that dismissed the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional. Windsor fought DOMA, which defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman, after her partner of 40 years died and she was denied the same benefits as a married woman. Supreme Court Strikes Down DOMA, Giving Equal Rights To All Married Gay Couples

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that a key part of the Defense Of Marriage Act is unconstitutional on Wednesday morning, extending federal marriage benefits to the 12 states that have legalized gay marriage. "DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of... equal liberty," wrote Justice Kennedy for the majority. It's a huge civil rights victory for the country's 130,000 legally married same-sex couples.
