White House Blasts Rubio Response: "Could Have Been Delivered By Governor Romney"

    Fighting words!

WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Jay Carney blasted the Republican response to the State of the Union delivered Tuesday night by Sen. Marco Rubio.

"While the messenger may have changed, the message we heard last night from the Republican speaker was entirely consistent with the policy ideas that Mitt Romney campaigned on and the American people didn't support," Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One Wednesday morning as Obama traveled to Asheville, N.C. to talk about his plans for manufacturing.

Carney noted that Rubio is playing a major role in the Senate effort to bring about comprehensive immigration reform, but said that with respect to his remarks in response to Obama, "They could have been delivered by Governor Romney."

Carney said he didn't know if Obama took the time to read Rubio's remarks.
