Photographing The Passage Of Time

This $85,000 camera takes pictures that show the passage of time, from left to right.

It works through the slit-scan photography process, the same trick that created the trippy "Star Gate" sequence in 2001 and Star Trek's "warp speed" effect. The pixel columns on the left were taken full seconds before the columns on the right.

If it looks like our panorama hacks, there's a reason. A slit-scan camera is basically a low-tech panorama that's more prone to artful glitches. Many digital cameras use some version of the same process, which is how you end up with pictures like this one.
