Man Tests Positive For Ebola In Delhi: India Officials

An Indian man who was treated and cured of Ebola in Liberia showed traces of the virus in his semen. He has been quarantined at the Delhi airport.

An Indian national recovering from Ebola was quarantined in Delhi on his return from Liberia, the Times of India reported.

The 26-year-old has been quarantined in a special facility at the Delhi airport.

According to the health ministry, the man was treated and cured of Ebola in Liberia and showed no symptoms. His semen samples, though, tested positive for the deadly virus. He was immediately isolated on Nov. 10.

The man will remain in isolation until his body fluids test negative, the ministry said in a statement.

But he is not an Ebola case, or an Ebola patient, one health official insisted to Reuters.

"It is not an Ebola case, he is an Ebola-treated patient who is negative in blood but whose body fluid is positive. He has no symptoms," the official said; the wire reported that the official declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.

This is the Ebola quarantine in India, although the man was treated and given a certificate of medical clearance by the Liberian government.

Three of his blood samples tested negative for the virus at the National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi, which, as per World Health Organization guidelines, meant he was Ebola-free. On re-analysis, his semen samples tested positive for the virus.

Traces of Ebola can remain in secretions such as semen and urine for up to 90 days even after successful treatment. The ministry stated that it is possible to transmit the virus during this period.

The man, who was working in Liberia, underwent mandatory screening at the Delhi airport on Nov. 10. He told authorities he was treated for Ebola at a health facility in Liberia and was discharged on Sept. 30, the Hindustan Times reported.

"The situation is under control and there is no need for any alarm. However, all precautions are being taken in this regard," the ministry said.
