At least 30 Iraqi soldiers and allied fighters were killed in multiple suicide attacks by ISIS at a police base in the western Anbar province of Iraq on Monday, the Associated Press reported.
Three suicide bombers from the extremist group drove into a police base in the Tharthar area and caused a large explosion in the ammunition depot, officials said.
More than 40 troops were injured in the attack. A number of high-ranking officials were killed, the BBC reported.
The attack came in the wake of the Iraqi government's military operation to drive ISIS extremists out of Anbar province with the help from both Shiite and Sunni allied fighters.
The operation was announced last week after ISIS militants seized control of Anbar's capital city of Ramadi — a key strategic point for both sides due to its size and proximity to Iraq's capital, Baghdad.
