Louisville Metro Police said the suspect is now in custody..

Fern Creek High School went into lockdown after one shot was fired around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Police said several students had reported seeing a firearm on campus.

The shooting happened in a classroom, which the shooter left immediately afterward, WDRB News reported.

An officer told WDRB News that the suspect is a 16-year-old male sophomore at Fern Creek High School.

Students were evacuated in a single file with their hands on their heads before 2 p.m.

Earlier Tuesday, police in Albemarle, North Carolina, responded to a shooting at Albemarle High School early on Tuesday morning, WSCOTV reported.

According to officers who spoke to Channel 9, one student had been shot and another person had been placed in custody.

The school has been placed on lockdown, and no information on the student's condition was immediately available.

Speaking to the Stanly News and Press, Abermarle Police Chief William Halliburton said police had been called to the school just after 7:30 a.m. and were able to locate a student with a gunshot wound to the leg.

They then located the suspected shooter — who is also a student of the school — and placed him in custody.

The lockdown at the school ended at 9:30 a.m., according to Stanly County School officials.

A shooting occurred around 7:40 a.m. during an altercation between two students in a courtyard in front of the school building, said Albermale Police Chief William Halliburton.

After police responded to shots fired, the shooter dropped his gun and surrendered, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Halliburton said, "What could have happened we've seen across the country, we escaped that ... He could have done more so the reaction is that we're thankful that he gave himself up."

This morning, prior to the start of the school day, there was a shooting at Albemarle High School campus. The shooter is in custody and the school is in lockdown. A student was injured. At this time we do not know the condition of the student.
