The challenge consists of eating a dozen glazed donuts while running five miles in an hour.

A man has died after participating in the "Krispy Kreme Challenge," which requires people to eat a dozen donuts while running five miles in an hour.

(This is not the runner in question.)

The 58-year-old man stopped running in the first mile of the course complaining of chest pains, event organizers said on Facebook.

The man, who was not identified, was sent to a local hospital but died. The event is held in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones," the organizers said.

The competition has been an annual event for more than a decade, according to the event's website.

It was started in 2004 as a dare between a group of students at North Carolina State University.

The challenge "epitomizes the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude," according to organizers.

"What started as a challenge among 10 friends has transformed into a nationally publicized charity race, and the number one tradition to complete before graduating from North Carolina State University," the organizers write on the website.

Runners can chose to participate as either a "challenger" or a "casual" runner.

"Challengers" have to complete the entire challenge in order to be eligible for prizes, while "casual" runners do not have to eat all or any of the doughnuts.

The organizers did not say whether the man who died was competing as a "challenger or "casual" runner.

The event's proceeds go to North Carolina Children's Hospital, and organizers say they have raised nearly a million dollars to date.
