People Are Accusing This Reality Show Of Unfairly Manipulating A Contestant

Ofcom has received 650 complaints about an episode of Love Island that suggested a contestant may have been tempted to be unfaithful to his partner, when he hasn't been.

Love Island is a reality show that has been a sensation in the UK, but the show has again faced criticism for manipulative behaviour, this time by the producers.

This controversy surrounds Jack and Dani, a couple that has been exclusive since the very start of the series. The two are very much smitten with each other.

In a twist a few days ago, all of the couples were moved apart into separate houses (one of which is called Casa Amor), including Jack and Dani. And in another twist, Jack's ex, Ellie, had entered his house as a contestant.

Jack later told his housemate Adam that he has fallen in love with Dani.

But then Jack got a text saying that all housemates in both houses would be taking part in some 'cheeky challenges', which involved kissing and fake sex positions.

Dani was clearly uncomfortable by the challenges and refused to participate when her name came up in a kissing challenge because she would consider this cheating.

However, with both houses competing in the same challenges at the same time, Dani was not able to see what was going on in the other house with Jack.

However, the producers sent a video to Dani's house, featuring clips from the other house. She saw a clip of Jack spotting his ex, with him saying, "Oh my god."

The video was edited so that it didn't show Jack having a lack of feelings for his ex or him saying that he had fallen in love with Dani.

Dani was clearly devastated by the video.

People accused Love Island of deliberately manipulating and misleading Dani to think that her partner had been cheating on her, when he hadn't been.

Oh fuck you producers, thats emotional abuse & bullying. For what? For TV? #LoveIsland is good because its so crap. Doing that to Dani, aint funny or good for ratings, Cheap Shots. People are watching anyway. That shit is abusive, whoever came up with the idea are twats. Shit TV

Not right that #LoveIsland have decided to show Dani that video of Jack. Why put a girl through the mental torment when there's nothing happening between Jack & his ex? If anything they should be showing G a pic of Josh & Kaz kissing to give her a heads up!

@LoveIsland Shame you had to make her paranoid @LoveIsland by making her think Jack cheated on her when he has been sleeping solo and pinning for her #shameonloveisland

And they said that this was unnecessarily affecting a contestant's mental health.

@LoveIsland Following the recent events and with peoples mental health being pushed this is in very very poor taste. Even previous contestants should be disgusted in this as they preach about talking to someone about mental health #lovelsland

I was really enjoying @LoveIsland like I forgot how toxic manipulative reality tv was, but that Dani stunt was so twisted I don’t know if I can continue to watch a show that encourages the deterioration of someone’s mental health. Love Island wants people to be mentally unwell.

Some people are considering taking action.

Petition for Danny Dyer to enter the villa and confront the producers #loveisland

an accurate representation of my level of inner frustration knowing that jack has just admitted he loves dani but watching dani crying and thinking he’s getting back with his ex #loveisland https://t.co/sm44gJ5mVw

(In case you didn't know, Danny Dyer, who appears in the British soap EastEnders, is Dani's father.)

Ofcom, which deals with complaints sent in by viewers, told BuzzFeed News that it had received 650 complaints about Dani being shown the video.

Made an official complaint to ofcom about tonight’s episode of Love Island because mental health comes before entertainment thank you and goodnight

The number is expected to rise. It also seems like the highest amount of complaints the series has received so far.
