Urban Outfitters To Open A Beauty Shop In Its Giant New Herald Square Store

The retailer has identified makeup, nail, and hair products as a "growth opportunity."

Urban Outfitters, which has been expanding its selection of nail polish, hair products, and makeup, says it will open a beauty shop in its new Herald Square store in New York City next year.

"Throughout the year, the brand has expanded its selection of nail and hair products, and believes this assortment can be expanded to include color, face, and other beauty products," Chief Executive Officer Richard Hayne said on an earnings call with analysts yesterday. "In order to realize this opportunity, the Urban brand recently hired a veteran of the beauty industry to oversee the growth and development of this category, both in stores and online. Among other initiatives, the brand expects to launch a beauty shop in the Herald Square store, which is scheduled to open next year."

The company didn't immediately return emails from BuzzFeed seeking the name of the new hire.

The new Herald Square location in Manhattan, at 56,730 square feet, will be a three-floor "lifestyle center" and Urban's biggest store in the world.

Home goods and beauty both represent growth opportunities for Urban Outfitters, Hayne said yesterday. The namesake chain is the biggest and most mature of Urban's brands, with 225 stores, compared with 186 Anthropologie locations and 86 stand-alone Free People stores.

Urban started its online beauty shop in 2010, where it sells items like $22 Anna Sui lip balm and 3 Concept eyeshadow for $12.
