Large Explosion Hits Texas Chemical Plant

The explosion occurred about 40 miles north of Houston, sending a large plume of black smoke into the air. No one is believed to have been in the plant when the explosion occurred, officials said.

A large explosion was reported at a Conroe, Texas, chemical plant Friday afternoon, sending a large plume of smoke into the air.

Residents in a 2-mile radius from the plant were ordered to shelter in place as firefighters reported to the area, KHOU reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Jennifer Nichols, spokeswoman for the Montgomery County Public Health Department told BuzzFeed News no one was believed to be in the plant at the time of the explosion.

Witnesses near the plant posted pictures of the flames on social media. Nichols said there were no dangers to the public from the fumes of the fire.

The explosion occurred at the DrillChem plan in Conroe, ABC 13 reported. According to the company's website, it manufactures sealants, shale inhibitors and lubricants.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known, Nichols said.
