Shaun Kitchener, a 26-year-old writer from London, was recently playing Pokémon FireRed when he noticed that gym leaders are sort of flirty.
Well, some are flirtier than others.
"I developed a weird obsession with those quotes and wondered how far I’d get if I used them as battle come-ons in real life – only replace 'battle' with 'flirtatious', and replace 'in real life' with 'on Grindr,'" Kitchener wrote on his website.
Kitchener is in an exclusive relationship, but he wanted to try out some of the gym trainers' lines on Grindr to see what would happen.
"It was harder than I expected actually to engage people in conversation," Kitchener told BuzzFeed News.
"Obviously, the chats I did have weren't exactly full-flowing conversations but loads of them dried up really fast," he said. "Which I guess is just like what it's like on stuff like Grindr anyway, whether you're talking like a Game Boy or not."
But sometimes the dude was down for, uh, exploring caves.
Or interested in Kitchener's "rock hard will power".
"There weren't as many dick pics as I think Grindr's reputation led me to expect," he said. "I guess you could argue that it doesn't really matter what you say or how you talk these days; There's plenty of casual sex for everyone!"
