A Possible Chemical Attack At A Furry Convention Sent 19 People to The Hospital

More than a dozen attendees of the Midwest FurFest were sent to the hospital Sunday after a third alarm chemical leak was discovered.

This weekend hundreds of animal costume-wearing convention goers gathered in Chicago for this year's Midwest FurFest.

Things were going smoothly Saturday night as furry enthusiasts danced about the Hyatt Regency O'Hare hotel.

If you aren't familiar with furries, they're a group of people who enjoy dressing up in fur suits and roleplaying as anthropomorphic animals.

Early Sunday morning, a third alarm chemical leak was discovered on the hotel's 10th floor.

According to a statement on Midwest FurFest's website, first responders determined that a container with a chlorine-containing chemical in it was broken.

The whole hotel was evacuated.

Furries mingled about waiting for the all clear.

Some posed for evacuation selfies.

Many went across the street to a neighboring hotel.

Law enforcement told local reporters that the leak was "consistent with an intentional act" and an investigation has been opened.

More than a dozen people who complained of nausea and dizziness were transported to nearby hospitals. Hotel guests were finally allowed to return around 4 a.m.

Midwest FurFest said in Sunday's statement that they won't be issuing refunds because the chemical leak was "an unforeseen possibly criminal act."

Out for Sunday! Get your last Sabertooth hugs in!

Luckily, it doesn't seem like it has put that much of a damper on the weekend's festivities.

Despite everything, #queuecon carries on in good spirits. #MWFF

Judging by photos on Instagram and Twitter, it seems like it'll take more than a possible third alarm chemical attack to ruin Midwest FurFest.

I found a @HoweeHusky in suit finally! He's so sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
