SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Rick Santorum intensified his attacks on Newt Gingrich today, just as Gingrich rises in the polls here in South Carolina.
Santorum described "the hubris, and I might even go so far as to say the arrogance of Speaker Gingrich to suggest that I don't have the experience to run a campaign" to an enthusiastic crowd in Spartanburg.
"I'm not someone who's gonna point my finger at someone and say 'I'm better than you, you should get out,'" Santorum said.
Santorum also referenced a video of Gingrich sitting on a couch with Nancy Pelosi and talking about climate change that proved controversial for the former speaker.
"The only person I've ever sat on a couch with was my wife," Santorum said. "And that matters. Judgment matters."
The new jabs mark the urgency of Santorum's feeling about preventing Gingrich from replacing him as the conservative standard-bearer, and seems to put an end to an alliance warm enough to inspire reports of a nonagression pact.
