Illinois Senator Joins Other Republicans In Supporting Samantha Power

Power's nomination as U.N. Ambassador is garnering support from conservatives.

WASHINGTON — Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk is joining other Republican senators in supporting the nomination of Samantha Power as United Nations ambassador.

Kirk met with Power on Monday and tweeted afterward about looking forward to working with her on Iran-related topics:

A source in Kirk's office confirmed that Kirk will be a yes vote on Power's nomination.

Power, a longtime anti-genocide advocate who most recently served on the National Security Council, is expected to be confirmed fairly easily by the Senate. Sens. John McCain, Jeff Flake, and James Risch all told The Hill this week that they hope Power is in place at the U.N. in time for the General Assembly in September.

On Tuesday, conservative figures including Paul Wolfowitz and Elliott Abrams were part of a group who wrote a letter to Sen. Bob Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Bob Corker, the ranking Republican, urging Power's confirmation.
