In October 1931, President Herbert Hoover's administration asked the famous entertainer Will Rogers to appear with Hoover on a radio program to discuss the Great Depression, then in its early years. Newsreel cameras captured the classic populist speech that emerged from the broadcast; it can't have been what Hoover was expecting.
