NEW YORK — A former Department of Correction officer shot and killed a man in a busy Brooklyn subway station Tuesday, New York City police said.

The shooting took place during the evening rush at the Borough Hall station in downtown Brooklyn. Police said that the 69-year-old shooter was "involved in a dispute" with two younger men. He then shot one of the men, a 29 year old who was not identified.

The victim was taken to Brooklyn Hospital center, where he died. The shooter was not arrested or charged, police said. The New York Times identified the shooter as William Groomes.

Following the incident, Lexington Avenue Line trains skipped the station for several hours. Blood and a baseball cap could be seen on the mezzanine level.

Norman Seabrook, the head of the New York City Correction Officer Benevolent Association, confirmed that the shooter was a retired DOC officer.

"We should not rush to judgment before we know all the facts," Seabrook told BuzzFeed News.

The DOC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
