Shooting In Newark That Killed One, Injured Three, Was Retaliatory, Cops Say

Police officials said the shooting was gang-related and in retaliation for a similar incident last year.

Authorities are searching for the gunman who killed a reported gang member and injured injured three others in Newark, New Jersey, on Wednesday.

The victims were found shortly after 2 p.m. outside a barbershop on Clinton Place, in southwestern Newark. They were not immediately identified.

George Washington Carver Elementary School was briefly placed on lockdown due to the close proximity of the shooting.

The Newark Police told Eyewitness News that the shooting was gang-related and that the victim who died — a 22-year-old man — had been shot in the same area last year.

Family members identified him to local media as James Elam. He had reportedly tried to run away as gunshots rang out, but the shooter chased him down.

"It was retaliatory for an incident that happened particularly last year at this time," Police Director Eugene Venable told CBS New York.
