7 In 10 New Yorkers Disapprove Of Cops Turning Their Backs On De Blasio

A new poll shows that most New York City voters are mad at NYPD officers for beefing with Mayor Bill de Blasio. But most also think the New York City Police Department is doing a good job — that is, except among black voters.

1. Turns out 69% of New York City voters disapprove of cops turning their back on Mayor Bill de Blasio during the funerals for two police officers who were shot dead.

2. And 77% think the president of the largest NYPD union went too far in his comments blaming the mayor for the killings.

3. Fewer than half of white voters think the mayor supports the NYPD.

4. What's more, white voters think the beef between City Hall and the cops is the mayor's fault — however, black voters put the onus on the officers.

5. Approval for Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, however, extends across racial and ethnic lines.

6. People are displeased with both Pat Lynch and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Only 29% of New Yorkers approve of Sharpton, who has been one of the harshest critics of the NYPD. Meanwhile, Lynch, one of the most staunch defenders of the NYPD's rank and file, has an even lower approval rating of 18%.

That said, 56% of black New Yorkers approved of Sharpton, with only 6% of them approving of Lynch.

7. Bottom line: Except among blacks, the majority of New York City voters think the NYPD is doing a good job.
