This Foreign Fighter In Syria Is Terrifyingly Good At The Internet

An inside look into the Syrian conflict, via guns, cats and Instagram filters. Update: the fighter responds.

About five months ago, a user named chechclearr began posting photos to Instagram.

He appears to be a foreign fighter affiliated with al-Qaeda in Syria.

He posts photos of battle, sometimes with captions. This one read: "Fearless, not Reckless. Alhamdulillah."

And then he'll post something like this.

He shows how violence has seeped into daily life in Syria.

And extols the murderous al-Qaeda members who are now leading the insurgency against Bashar al-Assad.

Then he mixes it up again.

He engages with people on Instagram and documents battle on the frontlines.

He writes in English, and pays particular attention to Dutch coverage of Syria. There is accented English in this video.

"All our goodies in the front, goodies in the back."

He posts a lot of videos of Syrian children.

And gets artistic with filters.

Making Syria's horrific war appear like a movie.

Then a cat again.

He has shown photos and videos of dead people.

He says make-up is for clowns and warns women not to wear it.

The war — fought between rebels and al-Qaeda versus the regime of Assad — has killed more than 100,000 people and forced more than 2 million to flee Syria.

The fighter has been holding a Q&A on ask.fm about his experiences in Syria. This is what he had to say about this post:
