Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc shocked many on Monday when he told a crowd that women should not laugh out loud in public because it was one of the causes of Turkey's worsening "moral corruption."
"A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent," Arinc told a crowd in the western region of Bursa during a celebration to mark the end of Ramadan, The Guardian reported. "She should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times."
Soon, the hashtag #direnkahkaha — Turkish for resist and laugh — spread as women posted photos of their smiling faces to defy the deputy prime minister.
