Two 3-Year-Old Children Shot Their Parents Within Three Days

A second three-year-old child in Florida shot his mother in the leg just a few days after another three-year-old shot both his mother and his father in New Mexico.

WSVN reports that a 3-year-old boy shot his mother in the leg inside their home in Davie, Florida at 3 a.m. on Monday morning.

According to police, at around 3 a.m., in the area of Southwest 48th Avenue and 59th Terrace, the boy gained access to the mother's weapon and shot her in the leg as she was sleeping.

"A 3-year-old male had gained access to his parent's weapon," said Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle. "He discharged one round striking the mother in the leg."

The woman was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The boy and other children reportedly living at the residence are currently staying with their grandparents while police investigate how the child obtained access to the gun and why he was awake at such a late hour.

Reports of the shooting come just two days after another three-year-old shot both his parents inside a motel room in Albuquerque.

KOB reports that the child grabbed a handgun out of his mother's purse and fired off one round that pierced his father's buttock, then hit his mother in the right shoulder.

Albuquerque police say their initial investigation leads them to believe it was an accident, but they are waiting to do a safe house interview with the boy and the woman's 2-year-old daughter before deciding if anyone should be charged.

Justin Reynolds says he and his pregnant girlfriend Monique Villescas were getting ready to order pizza when the incident occurred.

"It was like if I was to get up shake your hand and sat back down. That's how fast it happened, "said Reynolds." All of a sudden we heard a gun go off and the next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realized I was shot too."

The woman's two-year-old daughter who was in the room was unharmed. Both parents were released from the hospital Saturday in stable condition.

The children were placed in the custody of the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department pending a criminal investigation.

These reports come less than two weeks after a two-year-old in Florida fatally shot himself inside his parents' car when he pulled a gun out of the glove compartment.
