HOUSTON, Texas — Mitt Romney was repeatedly booed during a speech at the NAACP convention Wednesday, as the Republican stuck to his standard campaign message of criticizing President Obama's economic record, and pledging to repeal Obamacare.
Romney received a mostly polite reception at the beginning of his remarks, with a smattering of light applause throughout — until he promised to repeal Obama's signature legislative achievement. When the crowd began booing, Romney went off script to assure the audience that he would keep key elements, and replace the law with another health care plan.
That pivot drew some more light applause, but then minutes later, he attacked Obama's economic record, and was booed again. That time, a number of the people in the audience attempted to quiet the hecklers.
He followed up the booing by saying, "I submit to you this, if you want a president who will make things better in the African-American community, you're looking at him."
The line drew a mix of boos and cheers for the third time, to which Romney responded confidently, "You take a look."
