Student Loan Agency Apologizes After Tweeting "Help Me I'm Poor" Meme

"If this is you, then you better fill out your FAFSA."

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the largest provider of student financial aid in the U.S., tweeted Tuesday night a popular Bridesmaids meme along with an encouragement to fill out FAFSA forms:

If this is you, then you better fill out your FAFSA: http://t.co/uEW9x3D9YL

In Bridesmaids, Kristen Wiig said "Help me, I'm poor," to a flight attendant as she drunkenly tried to sneak into first class.

People quickly criticized FAFSA for the tweet.

Poor people trying to better themselves is so funny, amirite?! RT @60th_Street: @happyloner @FAFSA that is the worst.

Hey @FAFSA I have a question. Since I'm poor AND I always filled out my FAFSA will you erase my loans? #AskFAFSA

You think we chose to be poor? You think we wanted to struggle? @FAFSA

Bad social from @FAFSA. Being “poor” is nothing to joke about, especially with the hardships people go through to go to school.

About an hour later, FAFSA deleted the tweet and followed with an apology early Wednesday.

We apologize for the insensitivity of our previous tweet. Our goal is to make college a reality for all. We're very sorry.
