A deadly explosion rocked a security building in Egypt Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and injuring 120 others. Egypt's state-run MENA news agency reported there was a blast on the top floor of the building followed by a car bomb on the street below at 1:10 a.m. local time.
After the explosion, part of the Interior Ministry building collapsed and windows of the surrounding buildings shattered. Police have evacuated the area.
Among the many injured in the blast was the head of the security directorate of Dakahlia governorate, MENA reported, citing health ministry officials.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but interim Prime Minister Hazem Beblawi called it a terrorist attack and described the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.
"Prime Minister Beblawi has declared the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization," MENA quoted spokesman Sherif Showky as saying.
The attack comes ahead of a Jan. 14 referendum for a new constitution. The draft constitution bans religious parties and gives more power to the military.
Former President Mohamed Morsi, who was part of the Muslim Brotherhood, was unseated in July and protests have escalated since. He is set to face trial for a failed attempt to escape prison in 2011 and several other reasons.
