An NYPD sergeant was served with disciplinary charges and stripped of her badge and gun in relation to her role in the 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner in Staten Island, the police department said in a statement.
Sgt. Kizzy Adonis was placed on modified duty Friday, essentially extending the department's statue of limitation for someone to face charges, an NYPD spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.
Sgt. Adonis was on the cusp of the 18-month period in which an officer can be charged and being placed on modified duty allows the police department to pursue charges against her once the federal investigation is complete, the spokesperson said.
Sgt. Adonis, a probationary supervisor assigned to the 120th precinct in Staten Island, was a supervisor on the scene of Garner's death during his arrest on suspicion of selling loose cigarettes. Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who put Garner in the fatal chokehold, was placed on desk duty pending a federal investigation.
