Donohue's return to work and promotion come as a federal jury is deliberating over whether to sentence Dzokhar Tsarnaev to death or life in prison without parole. Tamerlan was killed after his brother ran him over in the days after the bombing.

Donohue was shot in the leg and almost bled to death on April 19, 2013 during a firefight with the Tsarnaev brothers in Watertown, Massachusetts. Donohue was bleeding from his groin as another officer performed CPR on him.

The officer was regularly in the courtroom during Tsarnaev's trial. After a jury found Tsarnaev guilty on all charges, Donohue told BuzzFeed News he felt "satisfied, but not happy."

“None of this brings me any joy,” he said at the time. “I’m satisfied that the jury found the defendant guilty across the board.”

Donohue was one of four officers promoted to sergeant on Friday.

Congratulations to all those promoted today.

Thank you everyone for your kind words today --and congratulations to the new Deputy Chief and fellow sergeants!
