More than four million people are said to have fled Syria's war, and at least half of them are believed to be children. Thousands of others are fleeing conflicts and poverty in their home countries, too, all in hopes of beginning new lives in Europe.

Many of these children are taking the perilous journeys across the seas to go to countries like Germany, while spending their nights outside along the route. The younger ones carry few toys among their possessions, and are forced to make the best out of their bleak surroundings. Associated Press photographers have captured the smiles of some of these young children as they travel through Europe.
