Here Are The Victims Of The El Paso Walmart Shooting

One mother was apparently killed while shielding her 2-month-old son.

At least 22 people were killed in a terrorist attack at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday. The dead include a mother who was holding her small son, as well as eight people from Mexico. At least 27 more were injured.

On Monday, authorities released a list naming those who died. Eight of the victims were Mexican nationals; El Paso borders Ciudad Juárez in Mexico.

"While borders may separate us, our grief transcends them," El Paso Mayor Dee Margo said in a press conference on Monday. "We are one region and we will honor every victim like they were a member of our community."

Here is what we know so far about the victims:

Jordan Anchondo

Jordan Anchondo, 25, was shot to death while apparently shielding her 2-month-old son, according to the Associated Press, who spoke with Anchondo's sister, Leta Jamrowski, in the waiting room of the University Medical Center of El Paso.

Anchondo was shopping for school supplies when she was shot, Jamrowski, 19, said. Jamrowski said her 2-month-old nephew was being treated for broken bones and was injured when his mother fell on him while trying to protect him.

Leta Jamrowski is appealing for information about her brother-in-law Andre Anchondo, who is missing after a mass shooting in El Paso. Her sister Jordan Anchondo was shot dead in the attack. For live updates on this story, click here: https://t.co/yykNV5dnt3

"From the baby’s injuries, they said that more than likely, my sister was trying to shield him," Jamrowski told the AP. "So when she got shot, she was holding him and she fell on him, so that’s why he broke some of his bones. So he pretty much lived because she gave her life."

Andre Anchondo

Jordan Anchondo's husband, Andre, was also killed in the shooting. His death was confirmed Sunday night by Jordan Anchondo's grandfather, John Jamrowski, the AP reported.

Benjamin Thompson, a friend of Anchondo's, told BuzzFeed News via Twitter that the couple had "just started life together (got married last year) and had so many plans for their life."

My heart is so fucking torn right now. Jordan gave her life protecting her child. I hope you are resting easy in knowing you saved your baby boy. I am praying you are in recovery, Andre. My heart goes out to you. All of El Paso is here for you and those beautiful babies.

Benjamin Thompson

"He was building them a home that they could all live in comfortably. He had actually just finished building the home (with his own two hands nonetheless) recently. He was ... such a strong and hard worker. Nothing came before his family," Thompson said.

Thompson said he and Anchondo had "rekindled" their friendship about a year ago and often talked about their families and fatherhood.

"I remember the day he told me he was expecting his boy," he said. "There was no happier moment in his life and you could tell. What happened to their new beautiful family is devastating."

Arturo Benavides

A niece of Arturo Benavides' confirmed to BuzzFeed News on Sunday that her uncle was one of the people killed in the shooting.

Jacklin Luna described her uncle as "a strong-willed, caring, giving, and special person." She said he was an Army veteran and was well-known in the community as a bus driver for Sun Metro for years.

Luna said her uncle was very involved in his family and their lives, always asking "about school, work, and our lives with love."

"He was the person to always give a helping hand, a home to stay, and a meal," she said. "He loved each and every one of us in our own ways. Loved oldies on a Sunday morning, sitting out on his chair in the front porch with his dog Milo at his feet."

Luna was one of many family members who posted to social media on Saturday and Sunday searching for Benavides, called "Turi" or "Tury" by different relatives.

Another niece of Benavides's, named Samantha, tweeted that her uncle and aunt were shopping together when the shooting began, and got separated. His wife was able to escape.

Angie Englisbee

Angie Englisbee was described by her grandson Jacob Hallberg as "the hero of our family."

Hallberg told BuzzFeed News that after his grandfather died of a heart attack at age 38, Englisbee had to find a job and take care of their seven kids alone. He said she "raised seven successful great children on her own," including his mother, Edie Hallberg.

"She worked hard her entire life and was a very devout Catholic," he said.

Edie Hallberg raced to the Walmart to try to find her mother and gave emotional interviews at the scene.

She told local media her brother had spoken with Englisbee earlier and she had been in the checkout line at the store.

Jacob Hallberg told BuzzFeed News he first heard what was going on when he saw his mother on the news.

"The videos online of her complete anguish were too much to bear," he said.

Hallberg requested that those in the El Paso area light a candle for his grandmother at St. Raphael's church in her memory.
